A scarce contemporary hand-coloured aquatint depicting the Storming of the Bastille 1789, "The taking of the Bastile on the 14 of July 1789 : Prise de la Bastile, le 14 Juillet 1789". Engraved by John Wells (fl.1789-1809). 38 cm x 50 cm (plate). Published by Benjamin Van der Gucht (1753-1794) of Lower Brook Street and Jane White (1746-1816) of Tavistock Street. November 1789. Note:- Three prints were etched in aquatint by John Wells (fl.1789-1809) probably after drawings made in Paris in 1789 by Anglo-French artist Charles Benazech (1767-1794). British Museum holds set [See Following Lot] but few others identified. Provenance:- Adolphe Le Goupy, Fine Prints, Paris (Label Verso): Ex collection Capt D Lowe c.1930
