A 1930s Chad Valley teddy bear with provenance

Unsold
Estimated at £150 - £200

A 1930s Chad Valley teddy bear with provenance, with light golden mohair, pronounced clipped muzzle, black stitched bulbous nose, mouth and claws, swivel head, jointed limbs, card lined feet, inoperative squeaker and uncovered button in ear —20in. (51cm.) high (missing eyes, pads covered, some wear and thinning); and an original photograph of the original owner with her pony - this bear and the following two lots were the childhood toys of Agnes Leith (nee Moore). She was born in May 1926 in Clarkson, outside Glasgow. She had an older brother. She was definitely not into dolls as a child and teddy bears were her thing. Her main interest was horses and she was lucky enough to have a pony and then a horse as she was growing up. Probably against her parents' wish for her to do something more traditional for a girl, she attended Auchencruive Agriculture College where she did a National Dairying Diploma. Her job as a young woman was to go around the local farms testing the quality of the milk.
