Foreward:

The Fire Mark Collection at the Chartered Insurance Institute has been an integral part of this important institution for many decades. It has been admired by many as they ascended the grand staircase, some little realising that it had been studied and cared for continuously by the Fire Mark Circle. The collection features in the seminal 1953 book ‘Footprints of Assurance’ by Alwin Bulau and in the equally important 1982 book ‘The British Fire Mark 1680-1879’. Not only will collectors be offered fine British marks, but a great diversity of overseas marks, some probably unique. Thanks to the huge generosity of all involved, the proceeds of the sale will be going to benefit the charitable work of the insurance industry.

Glossary

Condition statements given in this catalogue are a matter of opinion and should be read in conjunction with the Terms and Conditions of Special Auction Services. Condition statements have been given for British fire marks, but overseas marks have been treated as being in generally good condition, unless otherwise stated.
