A rare mid 19th century German carved wooden menagerie, probably Sieffen, comprising two main buildings painted white with a floral frieze and two cage fronts, the roofs grey, backs pale orange stone with dark orange mortar, pale aubergine lower and black and white windows —12in. (30.5cm) wide, a similar giraffe house with pointed front (although giraffe is two tall!) and seven small animal houses, all with black painted cage fronts, a zoo keeper with red jacket and blue cap holding a whip and his other hand on hip (replaced base and repaired around waist), animals comprising an angry elephant with wrinkly legs —5 ½in. (14cm.) long (repaired break to trunk), a lion with head turned to right and long mane, a happy giraffe with circular spots, a polar bear (missing ear), a grey leopard and an orange leopard both with heads turned to the left and hair whiskers, a zebra, a hyena and an antelope, nine various birds, six trees (some damage to leaves), four fence sections and a gate - a handwritten note with this group ‘Zoo given to C.C.B. by his grandmother Elizabeth Dyell? in 1868’
