A late 19th century continental oil on board of a boy dressed as soldier with wooden soldiers in the background, the boy dressed in play clothes with red cap, playing drum, three soldiers on a shelf behind and inscribed top right ‘Wer will unter die Soldaten, der muss haben ein Gewehr’, recently framed —8 ¾in . (22cm.) x 5 ¾in. (14.5cm) size of board - translatition - ‘If you want to be a soldier, you must have a rifle’, the first line of a 19th German folk song
