The Summer Teddy Bear Auction, a new format for Special Auction Services, over 200 lots of just teddy bears and soft toys, antique and collector's teddy bears.
At the core is the stock in trade of Jeanette Paros, one of the UK's first teddy bear dealers; who following an illness has now retired, but here beautiful selection of mainly antique Steiff and German musical teddy bears will certainly attract attention. There is also a wonderful collection of seven near mint 1930s Chiltern Hugmee teddy bears from 13 inches to 24 inches; it is unusual to see a line up of such good condition bears (above).
Perhaps the most poignant is a fabulous teddy bear gas mask case, probably by Farnell. Being sold by his original owner, David Ellender, who was born January 1939, so it was probable given to him in 1941/42 by his parents. He was born in Dover which was heavily shelled (only 22 miles from France) and bombed during the war. They slept in tunnels dug into the famous White Cliffs. " I can remember Doodle Bugs flying over and being shot down. It was a scary place to be. It is a wonder we both survived!" (estimate £600-800).
